February 14, 2001...In announcing the award, the citation read,
in part, "his voice, rich with a natural beauty, and his instinctive
flair for the dramatic have evolved steadily from his beginnings
in Victoria where, as a young man, he sang folk songs in coffeehouses
to help make ends meet. One of Canada's great operatic stars, he
is a lyric spinto tenor who has dazzled audiences with his scintillating
voice..."
The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding
achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. Appointments
are made on the recommendation of an Advisory Council, chaired by
the Chief Justice of Canada. The Governor General is Chancellor
and Principal Companion of the Order.
